A Look At: GameLoading Rise of the Indies

GameLoading: Rise of the Indiesis a documentary film which follows several indie game developers  through the process of creating, marketing, releasing their games and the struggles they encounter along the way.

In general, most of the developers are deeply excited to be working in the Indie arena. They feel like they have a blank canvas to make games about any topic. Divorce, cancer, how people make choices, really any topic is up for grabs. People want to have something new and unique to experience rather than the cut and dried AAA game experience that seems to be the norm these days.

The movie follows several games and indie developers through various stages of their development process. Some of the more recognizable names in the film include William Pugh and Davey Wreden, the duo behind The Stanley Parable, and Zoe Quinn, the developer behind Depression Quest.

Zoe Quinn has bore a huge brunt of harassment due to her indie game, from online slurs, to verbal threats on her personal phone, to physical altercations, to stalking. Other ladies also talk about their struggles about trying to get into game development that resonated with me, being a woman in tech. Even still, through all of the woes, the women want to see more diverse games from people around the world, men and women alike.

The Stanley Parable developers were a huge indie success story that many people even outside of the indie scene are aware of. GameLoading shows a bit behind the scenes of how the idea behind the game came about as well as various struggles that they faced creatively as the development of the game progressed.

The heart of the indie community was also showcased during coverage from the Penny Arcade Expo as well as the tech jam that was done on a train, where programmers, musicians, and artists collaborated to create a game while on a trip cross country.

Overall the movie provides a balanced look at what happens when someone sticks their toe into the pool on indie development, as well as the community that is behind it.
