PAX East 2015 - Edge of Space

We took a walk through the maze of Indie booths and ended up stopping by the booth for Edge of Space. Primarily, we stopped because there was a man dressed in a shark suit, and I had to ask him if he was the Left Shark. It turns out he was not, in fact, the left shark. He was a laser shark from Edge of Space, as well as one of the developers of the game.

My immediate thought was that the game reminded me of Starbound, which I'd seen played on Twitch by a couple of streamers. Our sharky host said that he'd heard the game compared to Terraria because of the digging as well as the crafting of weapons, armor and other items. Edge of Space takes place in a sandbox environment where the player can choose what they want to do next when they play. There is a multiplayer world on a hosted server which also keeps the world persistent. If you'd like to follow along with quests, those are available as well.

When you load into the game you can customize what your character looks like and then immediately enter the game into a tutorial which shows you how to interact with items in the game, how to craft things, how to equip gear, and of course, how combat works. Then you are put down onto the surface where you can go and explore. The surface creatures won't be aggressive and attack you, but as you dig further down into the world, that won't be the case. As night falls, the aggression will also increase. With this added danger there are increased rewards the further you dig down into the world where rare materials are harvestable.

Edge of Space is available on PC through Steam as an early access title. There is a timer inside of the game which tells you when the next build id going to be available. They try to release on a 2 to 4 week cycle, so you will be getting constant updates as it moves forward toward an official release.
