This week saw the long awaited and much anticipated release of Soundgarden's comeback album King Animal. And from it we expected so much, and also almost expected dissapointment. After all comebacks don't usually hold the same magic as when the band were first a big thing. Bands look older, sound different, even play different the second time around, but lately things have changed. The Rolling Stones released Doom and Gloom like it was still 1972 and they were still young, Kiss made a respectable comeback with Monster and Aerosmith came back with Music From Another Dimension, showing us all that grandad is still capable of rocking.
But what of Soundgarden and their new album King Animal? Click after the break for the review.
So, Soundgarden, big in the 1990s, a hugely influential and respected band of the grunge scene with such magnificent tunes as Black Hole Sun, Spoonman and Jesus Christ Pose released their first album in 15 years and have shown us that, in the bluntest possible terms that they certainly still have "it". They still have that magical sound from all those years ago, they still remained true to their roots, and with some very subtle modernisation have evolved as a band yet still sound like they could have released this in their heyday.
From start to finish King Animal is a monster with track after track of tuenful and melodic music with that trademark guitar sound, the voice of Chris Cornell and everything you'd expect and want from a band like Soundgarden. Listening to the album is like stepping back into the 1990s, yet it's like unearthing a perfectly preserved treasure that could quite potentially keep Mp3 players happy all over the world.
All this combined with the most appropriate track title ever in "Been Away Too Long" have cemented Soundarden back into their place as that band so many people love and adore like those 15 years passed in mere days.
Let's just hope that the next one is a lot sooner than 15 years away.
You can expect to hear new tracks from King Animal tonight on Lock 'n' Load at 10pm UK/5pm EST and on Sunday's Sunday Rock Show (10pm UK/5pmEST)
