Stock up on cinema ticket money for 2013

According to imdb, 5204 movies are slated to be released in 2013. That's 14 unique movies for each day of the year. Naturally there's going to be tons of crap in that 5k lot (which once again makes me wonder how much money is being wasted on rubbish), but it so seems that alongside come some really exciting titles that are hugely anticipated and should give you a nerdgasm.

On the superhero front we've got Iron Man, getting his mandated hero deconstruction in the third installment of the franchise (much like Batman got in 2012) and go against the Mandarin. Following suit, his buddy from the Avengers, gets a sequel in Thor: The Dark World, and will fight Melekith and and his ancient race of Dark Elves. Staying on the Marvel universe, we're also getting a new Wolverine movie in July called simply "The Wolverine", where Logan will travel to Japan in order to train with a samurai warrior. Still on Marvel but on the anti-hero super-hero front, Kick-Ass is going to be trained by Hit Girl to fight off Red Mist's reveng in the sequel that will see the theater screen sometime in the summer. On the rival front of the DC Universe, we see a return/reboot of Superman, in the "Man of Steel" movie carrying both Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan's signatures.
Hopping over to the fantasy and epic fields, we get a new 300 related adaptation on a Frank Miller novel with 300: Rise of an Empire. The story will follow Themistocles, and I can already tell you that the only common thing with the 300 story are going to be the Persians and Xerxes. This could be epic, but the 300 part is misleading. This has nothing to do with Sparta or Leonidas or the number 300 whatsoever. After District 9 in 2009, Peter Jackson strikes back with the long awaited Hobbit which will actually screen just before 2012 expires with the first part of the Hobbit trilogy, An Unexpected Journey, followed by the second part, The Desolation of Smaug, in 2013. We are also getting to see Lena Heady of Game of Thrones fame (which also comes for a 3rd season in April) and The Sarah Connor Chronicles, in the adaptation of Cassandra Clare series of novels The Mortal Instruments, starting up with City of Bones, half fantasy, half sci-fi which brings us to..

...the Science Fiction front. We cannot but wet our pants for the new upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness movie by J.J. Abrams packed with an excellent cast and of course, tons of lens flares, and of course everyone yelling.. KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!. We will also get Brad Pitt hugging zombies in World War Z which follows suit of the zombie apocalypse scenario recent popularity with things such as the Walking Dead and Left4Dead. It is not a surprise then that there is also a Zombie romance film coming out too. No, I am not talking about a romance flourishing in a post-apocalyptic zombie scenario, but rather about an actual zombie that falls in love with the girlfriend of one of his victims. If you want aliens blending in, then The Host coming out in April will deal with a human-alien symbiosis that goes the wrong way. Oh, there is also a sequel to the Hunger Games called "Catching Fire" slated for a late December release. Not enough aliens? Then how about giant robots piloted by humans fighting off an alien attack, featuring Ron Perlman under Guillermo del Toro direction? It is called Pacific Rim and it is coming out in July. Additionally, in a very Avatarish/Dances with wolfish scenario, Oblivion sends Tom Cruise to a distant planet to destroy the bad aliens, but in the end he starts to question his mission, what he knows of the planet and himself. Not enough aliens yet? Then lets get have Indiana Jones meet the aliens in Enders Game, where an unusually gifted child is sent to an advanced miliatry school in space to prepare for a future alien invasion after the first one 70 years ago. No, Harrison Ford is not the child, nor Captain William Adama ;). Traditionally, Will Smith deals with aliens, so we will have another look at him in "After Earth", where after crash landing he explores a planet that was evacuated by humans a thousand years earlier. If you remember Vin Diesel in Pitch Black, then you will get a jolt in your memory as we are getting him to re-enact Riddick, in the third installment of the Chronicles of Riddick film series, titled.. well.. Riddick. So much Riddick it is Riddickulus..

We also get remakes of old classic movies this year, such as Evil Dead, The Great Gatsby and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (now in glorious 3D, Booyah!). And how about some non classic ones such as Mortal Kombat directed by Kevin Tancharoen who is responsible for the Mortal Kombat Legacy web series and the Mortal Kombat: Rebirth fan trailer, but also responsible for things such as Glee, Game and the Pussycat Dolls, search for the next doll... Mad Max makes a reappearance in 2013 as well with Tom Hardy starring as Max but no further info released.

Not exactly sci-fi, not exactly fantasy, not exactly super-hero, not exactly dystopian, but for sure exciting is the long, long, long, loooooooooooooooong awaited sequel to Frank Millers Sin City, titled A Dame to Kill For featuring the cast from the first movie (mmmm Jessica Alba).

When it comes to sequels, grab your booze cause we will get to see Hangover 3, The Fast and the Furious 6, Yippee Ki-yay mother-willis in A Good Day to Die Hard and Scary Movie 5.

Right in between there is Movie 43, which with a huge ensemble of famous actors, promises to make a total clusterfuck.

Of course, 2013 will also include those soul drenching and traumatizing films such as Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie, and the Human Centipede 3. Mercy...
